Day 57 • The 23rd of August

🌄 Day 57/365

The power went out all over the island at around 3am, which woke up everyone on Maui as soon as the fans and air conditioning units turned off. It was the warmest, stickiest night in a long time. After learning it would be hours before getting fixed, I gave up and went back to sleep, sweaty and hot. It just flipped on again while I was outside sitting with the sunrise. I enjoy the close knit community here, the way everyone wakes and chats on Maui Facebook channels, thousands of comments all chiming in around the island to say that they too were experiencing it. People regaled each other with memories of of an 18 hour island-wide outage years back. I wasn’t sure what I’d wake up to, but I did love that small feeling of being part of a larger community, all of us stuck together on this beautiful, tiny rock in the middle of the sea. Ohana. New friends. Neighbors all around. Sweaty or not, it was a very pleasant feeling. :)
