Yesterday someone asked me how many images I take during a typical sunrise session. It depends! If there’s not a cloud in the sky, I know we’re in for a color gradient. The “good” shades of color are only visible for about 10 minutes. I don’t need to take many shots. When there’s any sort of clouds in the sky, I have to wait a lot longer and take about 150 shots before I settle on one. When the sun rises, the clouds burn off in weird and fascinating ways, pushing away from the light and heat of the sun across the sky. I like to be extra sure in these moments that I’m getting the best patterns and swirls, those that best show off the sunrise of the day. It requires a lot of sitting with it and studying, letting it tell me when it’s reached it’s optimum form. Color gradients change so fast that if I miss it, it’s gone. I’m not snapping photos one after another but I also can’t look away from the sky for more than a minute or it might have morphed into something else. The trick in either case is losing all distractions and sitting quietly and communally with the arriving sun. It’ll show me what it wants me to see.
