Today would have been my grandparents’ 78th wedding anniversary. I don’t know why I remember these dates. My grandma took the train up to San Francisco to meet him as he left his ship (he was in the Navy during the war) and they immediately got married. I miss both of them. But, they’re here with me now, both in spirit and on the island. My mom brought me part of both their ashes in little urns to have with me. Fitting, because they used to go to Maui all the time. I remember them talking about it a lot, and occasionally my grandpa would play old timey Hawaiian music in his backyard filled with plumeria trees and make pina coladas. It’s nice to have them here with me.
