Big day! My mom is currently on a plane en route to Maui. We haven’t seen each other in two years. We left California the moment lockdowns lifted enough to let us. It was my mom who originally begged us a decade ago to check out Maui before committing to Hawai’i Island, which we reluctantly did and then fell in love with it. Turns out I like living on a smaller island.

Big week too! My mom is arriving on what would have been my grandfather’s 99th birthday (today), which is two days before my own birthday (on Friday the 13th this year. Woo! 🖤) My grandfather and I always celebrated together and my birthday has lost a lot of its shine after he died.

But now I’m living my little Hawaiian dream, something my grandpa would have been proud of. He loved Hawaii, Maui specifically, in fact. And my mom is arriving soon, with he and my grandmother’s ashes (she died 11 months ago at age 103), so that I can have a bit of their physical presence here with me in my new life. That means the only members of my blood family who accepted my existence will all be present with me on my birthday this year, in Hawaii. Funny how things work out, right?
