🌄 Day 197/365
Sometimes it’s really nice living somewhere so remote and far away that the rest of the world’s news just doesn’t make the headlines. No one (well, few people) are obsessed with current events and international news here like I was in California. Like everybody seemed to be on the mainland. Honestly, I didn’t realize until getting here how much it was stressing me out. Over here, on this small island surrounded by ocean for thousands of miles, “news” tends to be what’s happening locally. Very locally, people on Maui don’t even pay full attention to events on neighbor islands. And when the news is discussed, it’s always “did the power go out for you too last night?” Or “did they ever find that woman who went missing after the shark sighting?” (Okay that one is a little dire, but that’s island life for ya.) “Did you hear that Fukushima is closing?!” (Tiny grocery on the north shore that was here for a thousand years.) “Have you seen how green the West Mauis are after the rain??” My god, it’s refreshing. Part of me still holds onto the idea that I should be paying more attention to world or national events, but another part is just so happy to be free from the stress of it. I like only focusing on the community I live in. I like having conversations about the little goings-on that only people who live here know about. I’ve carried so much existential stress with me my entire life. It’s freaking amazing to be free of that and be able to focus on what’s right in front of me. I’m not slighting my friends who do keep up with politics and news as obsessively as I did. Someone has to! I’m just so grateful to be free of it. For me, it’s been a crucial part of improving my mental health.
