🌄 Day 148/365
I’m a big fan of rituals, hence this sunrise project, but it’s more than just a repetition of actions. It’s a mental exercise. Sometimes rituals are hard — they really make you think and reflect deeply on yourself and the world. Other times it’s silly, childlike, and fun, unlocking a small moment of joy from within. At the bar this month, I’ve been having everyone write down something they’re thankful for on fall-colored leaves, which I then stick up around the bar for everyone to read. Sometimes they’re silly (a lot of people are unsurprisingly grateful for beer) but many are quite personal and sincere. It’s sparked many a conversation with people and leaves (get it?) most of us feeling a little bit better about life. On the other hand, the bar interior gets pretty humid when it’s closed up so the bartenders have to pick up all the leaves that have fallen off the walls during the night. Our ritual has been experiencing the literal falling of leaves every morning, that we have to collect and redistribute. (Thanks, bar friends.)
