Day 114 • The 19th of October

Decided that at least once, at least for today, I’d include the very tippy-top of the volcano, the highest point on the island, at 10,023 feet. Haleakala is home to several important telescopes that monitor the skies high above, protected from light pollution by thousands of miles of ocean. Their existence is controversial. Hawaiians would prefer to keep their sacred regions holy and untouched by modern civilization, while science wants to take advantage of the prime viewing conditions. (If you zoom in on the photo, you can see the giant domes housing the telescopes at the very top.)

At least for today, I have no opinion on the matter. I’m just here to observe.
