Honestly unlike anything I’ve done before. I significantly changed up the formula here, making the red ochre the feature, rather than an addition. It’s been a while but I used another interpretive-mandala design, intentionally incorporating elements that are NOT traditional, mandala-speaking, but reflect modern technology and machinery as well as simpler, more organic shapes.
The dichotomy of the ancient and futuristic is my favorite part, with the ochre sitting atop a strong full-coverage layer of glowing blue, aqua, and green. New and old earth elements in one painting!
Red ochre is one of the oldest painting materials in existence, dating back over tens of thousands of years. Rich, luxurious earth. The idea that I’m using one of the same materials as my ancestors 50,000 years ago, derived in much the same way, is astonishing to me. Art, then and now, intermixed, separate but layered together. Just like our own history.
