I love how quiet it is when I first go outside. No birds. No traffic. No wind. Sometimes I can hear the waves crashing against the narrow beach. There’s usually only one neighbor with a light on at that time of morning. Still dark. … Still. Quiet and still. It is a truly peaceful time of day, and it only lasts about 15 minutes. It feels sacred. Sunrise is a thin place if there ever was one. Then the birds start waking up, chirping about, flying across my vision, starting their days. Roosters crow. Front doors start to open and close, people start walking to their cars. The bags they carry rustle and crinkle. An occasional beep-beep of someone’s auto door lock opening, engines turning over. Then the ocean and the quiet fade away, quickly replaced by the sounds of traffic on all sides. Dogs bark. People who are up and out begin greeting each other hello and wishing each other a good day. The window has closed. Dawn has ended. Maui is awake.
