🌄 Day 363/365
It’s certainly getting real now. So much of my identity has been tied up in this project. Each day I would see people, they would mention it to me, comment if it was a particularly beautiful sunrise, ask me how many days were left. It was a visually compelling project, and took on a life of its own that I couldn’t foresee at the beginning. That’s one of the things I love about making art. It lives. It breathes. It’s unpredictable. It practically creates its own language. In my opinion that’s what separates Art from a simple image. It has a story, a history. It reflects the work of the artist, in this case, me (a night owl) getting up every morning each and every day for a year, no matter where I was, no matter the weather, no matter what was going on in my life. The Art is in the project as a whole. It’s never been about any particular sunrise. It’s not one photo. It’s the dedication and passion behind it, the commitment to see it through to the end. And then, it’s important to let it end. That’s often hard for artists, knowing when to finish something. Sometimes we just want to fruit around indefinitely. But the Art is in calling it complete, setting the boundary. In my case the calendar helps give me that finality but it’s up to me to let it go.
Only 2 days left. Two! I feel a little nervous just saying it, but there’s more of me to come. I’m not through being an artist, even though this project will come to a close.
Today’s sunrise was captured in Kīhei, Maui at 5:46am on the 25th of June, 2023.
