🌄 Day 35/365

Yesterday a friend casually (and unintentionally) dropped a truth bomb on me in conversation and it hit me like a train. She said, “Your art seems to affect your health. You put all of yourself into it, I guess! Amazing!” As soon as I read it, I had a big Keanu Reeves “whoa” moment.

It does, doesn’t it? My art does affect my health. Whether it’s using my materials with abandon to the point that they made me seriously ill (in 2016) or coming up with a sunrise project *immediately* after I’d started a new program with a sleep therapist to address my insomnia. (He wasn’t thrilled when I told him.) So I say again, whoa.

Maybe I’m giving a little too much? I realized maybe I needed to save a bit of that passion and drive for my health. Maybe I’m stretching my brain too thin to sleep and eat. I am an artist through and through and I tend to eat, breathe, and not-sleep it. Art is food, art is air, art is life. Eating and sleeping get in the way.

Obviously I can’t survive like that long term. I spent the rest of the day trying to feel nurtured and cared for. I cared for myself as I would a child. Eat. Rest. Pursue balance. By the end of the day, I felt sleepier than I had in weeks (months?) and fell asleep at the relatively early hour of 1am. I actually felt somewhat rested when I woke for the sunrise! Amazing.

So, thank you, friend. The sunrise was extra spectacular today.

This moment was captured in Kihei, Maui at 6:00am on the 1st of August, 2022.
