🌄 Day 311/365

Well. It happened. Yesterday, my mom’s heart stopped again, around 4am Hawaii time, 7am California time. She was wearing a defibrillator vest, as she has been since being released from the hospital in mid March. It worked as intended, setting off an electric shock that restarted her heart. (Sometimes living in the future is amazing.) She eventually made it to the hospital, several hours later, where she remains now. She sounds pretty normal on the phone, happy the vest worked and that she’s alive. She longs to keep any food or water down. Until she can, she’s severely malnourished.

The situation is pretty rough. The combination of cancer and cardiac arrest has become a vicious cycle in which one can’t be treated without first treating the other. It’s like being stuck in a loop.

She likes to spare me the trauma so I only found out after a mutual friend informed me, while she was being taken to the ER.

I don’t have a lot more information to share at the moment. I’m incredibly grateful the defibrillator vest did its job and that my mom sounds hopeful and upbeat. I spent the day frantically texting and talking with friends, and I’m indescribably thankful for those that informed me, stayed with her, kept me updated on her condition, and generally represented on my behalf. 🙏 Today I will be focused on intense patient advocacy with her medical team, from across an ocean. I am strong, intelligent, and committed to making sure she is receiving proper treatment. I have doubts about the broken American health care system.

All well wishes, happy thoughts, rituals, prayers, love, and light being sent to us are welcome and appreciated. Any help you can give will be received with so much gratitude. đź’›
