Every morning I watch the sun battle this cloud layer that hugs the north shore of the island. Sometimes I don’t even see the first glimpse of rays until several minutes after the sun has passed the horizon. It lingers on the edge, spreading across the tops of the clouds like a silver-gold lining. It doesn’t rush. It has no need. The sun is patient. The players and the performance might change every day, but the victor always comes out on top.

This moment was captured in Kihei, Maui at 5:56am on the 23rd of July, 2022.
