🌄 Day 177/365

Happy Winter Solstice! Today is the shortest, darkest day of our year, an event so worthy of notice by our ancient ancestors that great stone monuments were designed around it. It must have been quite the momentous event, happening only once a year. Newgrange, in Ireland, the only megalithic structure I’ve been to personally, is aligned with the rising sun on the winter solstice. As the sun rises, it sweeps down a corridor and illuminates the interior of the chamber, the only time of year it does this. All that stone and building for just one (to three) days of perfect alignment. It certainly seems like a lot more work than we’d be willing to muster for such a seemingly minor event. I can only draw one conclusion: It wasn’t minor at all. It was as revered and sacred as any holiday we put effort into now. I’d say certainly a lot more, in fact! I can’t remember the last time I built a giant megalithic stone structure for the holidays. It would have to be something very worthy. :)
